The bill allows for up to $100 million to meet unpaid claims resulting from the May 2000 fire that destroyed more than 425 homes in Los Alamos, N.M. The wildfire began when the National Park Service lost control of a prescribed burn in the Bandelier National Monument, and the federal government assumed full responsibility. The National Association of Independent Insurers praised the Senates decision. “NAII is pleased the Senate has taken action and urges the House to follow suit as quickly as possible,” said Carl Parks, senior vice president for the association.
