A Mecklenburg County resident has been charged with felony insurance fraud after allegedly submitting a false claim to Peak Property and Casualty. Investigators from the North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division determined that the individual claimed their vehicle was struck by a deer when, in reality, it had been involved in a hit-and-run accident.
According to arrest warrants, the incident occurred on September 12, 2023. The suspect was taken into custody on January 30 in Gaston County and later released on an $8,000 secured bond. A court appearance was scheduled for February 3 in Mecklenburg County District Court.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey emphasized the financial impact of insurance fraud, noting that fraudulent claims contribute to higher premiums for consumers. Authorities encourage residents to report suspected insurance fraud anonymously through the state’s Department of Insurance.
