Claims Pour In After MD Tornado
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2001 Catastrophe PropertyThe top writers of insurance in Maryland are still trying to assess the claims situation resulting from the tornado that tore a 10-mile-long path of destruction through the central part of the state Sept. 24. Matthew Greer, a spokesman for State Farm Insurance Co., the state's top writer of homeowners and auto insurance, called the damage "significant." One day after the tornado struck, "we have 500 homeowners claims reported in the Laurel and Beltsville areas," he said, noting that the claims vary in severity. "Some are broken windows…others are uninhabitable," Greer said. On the auto side, about 200 claims have been reported to State Farm. These claims also vary in severity, he said. By the time all claims information is gathered, "we'll probably get over 1,200 homeowners claims, and we are expecting about 500-plus auto," Greer said.
