Database Cross-Checking Boosts Fraud Fight

Monday, September 13th, 1999 Fraud Technology

Software vendors, insurers and companies providing insurance services are now beginning to coordinate their fraud-fighting efforts in an unprecedented, high-tech attack on insurance cheats. One unique aspect of this effort has involved consolidating millions of computerized claims records to create huge databases. Powerful software search engines are then used to hunt down potentially fraudulent claims before they are paid. “One of the keys to fighting fraud is getting all the data together in one place to do it,” said Judy Johnson, an analyst with the Meta Group, a company in Stamford, Conn., that consults on information technology. “Having the data all in one place, and having search technology that allows you to go through all that data quickly and easily—that’s what is going to have the biggest impact on how much the insurance industry loses to fraud,” she said.
