This year’s Atlantic hurricane season should feature an average level of activity, say forecasters at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project. The Colorado State team predicts that 12 named storms will form during the hurricane season, which begins June 1, and that six of those storms will grow into hurricanes. The average annual number of hurricanes during the 1950-2000 period is 5.9.
