HIPPA, HIPPA, Hooray?

They‘re from the government and they‘re here to help. By now, most insurance companies are intimately familiar with HIPAA (the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Availability Act, a.k.a. Public Law 104-191)--the 1996 federal legislation that, among other things, set the goal of electronic data interchange (EDI) for healthcare transactions and healthcare security. The Senate has until the end of this year to enact the guidelines for privacy, security, and the transaction sets. At that point, according to Ed Rieker, CEO of Officemed.com, "the timers go off" and insurance companies will have two months to review the standards and then two years to complete the initiative.
