Monday, July 10th, 2000 Legislation & Regulation Risk ManagementThe U.S. House Banking Committee has approved medical privacy legislation that is supported by insurance agents but still opposed by insurance companies. The legislation, H.R. 4585, was approved by a 26-14 vote. During the consideration of the bill, the committee approved an amendment by voice vote that eased concerns of insurance agents and led agent groups to endorse the bill. But despite the amendment, insurance companies remain opposed to the legislation. The amendment stated that individually identifiable health information can be disclosed without consumer consent for the limited purposes of underwriting, rating, reinsuring or replacing a group health insurance plan or workers compensation policy.
