Insurers Urged To Mitigate
Monday, June 14th, 1999 Catastrophe PropertyWith natural disasters becoming costlier and apparently more frequent, the insurance industry needs to take a more active role in facilitating mitigation measures, one leading sociologist contends. In his new book, "Disasters By Design," Dennis Mileti, a sociologist at the University of Colorado in Boulder, suggested that insurers require property owners to retrofit their properties to an acceptable standard before making insurance available to potential policyholders.
