Insurers Warn On Privacy Regs

Monday, August 7th, 2000 Life & Health Risk Management

Insurers are warning regulators that time is running out for putting privacy regulations for the Gramm-Leach Bliley Financial Modernization Act in place, and that support for the regulations in their current form is doubtful. At issue is the treatment of health information privacy in the latest draft of the proposed regulations issued by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Insurers are preparing a letter offering their initial reaction to the draft. The letter was scheduled to be sent after press time and will be followed by more detailed comments in preparation for a special interim meeting to be held in Kansas City, Mo., at the end of August. The American Council of Life Insurers was reviewing the draft and declined initial comment.
