Louisiana Homeowners Targeted by Roofing Contractor in Alleged Insurance Fraud Scheme

In early August, a couple in Lafayette, Louisiana, found themselves at the center of an alleged insurance fraud scheme involving a roofing contractor from Roofing Guys LLC. After being referred by a neighbor, the couple agreed to an inspection of their roof. The contractor arrived and conducted a 90-minute inspection, informing the homeowners that their roof required significant repairs, with an estimated cost between $30,000 and $40,000. The contractor suggested that the damage was caused by recent windstorms and encouraged the couple to file an insurance claim, assuring them that the roof could be replaced for only the cost of their deductible.

However, the couple later sought a second opinion from a contractor at Top Team Roofing, the company their neighbor had originally recommended. This second inspection revealed that the damage on the roof was manmade, not the result of natural wind damage as initially claimed. The new contractor noted that the damage was uniform across the shingles, inconsistent with the uneven patterns typically seen in storm-related damage. A detailed report confirmed that the damage was likely inflicted intentionally.

Following these findings, the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) issued a cease and desist order against Roofing Guys LLC, stating that the contractor had intentionally damaged the roof to file a fraudulent insurance claim. The homeowner’s insurance company, Louisiana Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance, had already issued a payment for the damages based on the initial inspection. The LDI emphasized that such fraudulent activities not only increase insurance premiums but also erode trust between homeowners and contractors. Local law enforcement later arrested the contractor involved, charging him with property damage with intent to defraud. Roofing Guys LLC was served with the cease and desist order and faces potential legal consequences if they do not appeal within 30 days.
