A new proposal for "Insurance Coverage Law" board certification is gaining traction within the Florida Bar as back-to-back hurricanes exacerbate insurance disputes across the state. Leading the proposal, attorney Debbie Crockett and her committee emphasize the increasing need for a certification that helps Floridians identify highly qualified attorneys in insurance law. Supported by the Florida Justice Association’s Property Insurance Section, United Policy Holders, and the Florida Defense Lawyers Association, the initiative will be presented to the Board of Legal Specialization and Education (BLSE) on November 8.
The proposed certification would cover areas such as property insurance, bad faith claims, and liability, reflecting a wide range of insurance coverage issues common in Florida. If approved, it would advance through several Bar committees, eventually requiring approval from the Florida Supreme Court. Crockett’s team has already gathered support from nearly 260 insurance attorneys and several Bar sections, signaling strong interest in this certification.
This initiative comes at a time when Floridians are seeing increased premiums and greater coverage denials, especially after recent hurricanes highlighted gaps in legal assistance for insurance claim disputes. Advocates argue that such a certification would offer consumers more accessible, reliable options for legal representation in complex insurance matters.
