The new technology can be used to detect the mold Stachybotrys, commonly known as black mold, and more than 50 other possibly problematic molds. Stephen J. Vesper and Richard Haug-land, at the EPAs Office of Research and Development, National Expos-ure Research laboratory in Cincinnati, have devised a DNA-based system that allows identification and quan-tification of molds within hours. Current methodologies require days or weeks to identify molds before remedial action can be taken. With the new technology, up to 96 analyses can be run simultaneously by laboratory technicians, reducing the labor required, while significantly increasing accuracy and validity.
