The 2023 National Comp Conference, held in Las Vegas, shed light on the pressing challenges faced by workers’ compensation stakeholders, including employers, insurers, health care providers, and claims adjusters. A significant concern highlighted was the shortage of health care providers, impacting recovery times for injured workers. This shortage, coupled with burnout and retirement, exacerbates staffing challenges across healthcare professions.

Workplace safety emerged as another critical area, with the survey pinpointing remote work, potential marijuana usage, communicable diseases, and workplace violence as key concerns. Over half of the respondents considered these as top challenges, reflecting the evolving nature of work environments. Additionally, the growing legalization of recreational marijuana and the lack of reliable impairment testing tools are raising alarm bells for workers’ compensation teams.

Mental health conditions and their coverage in workers’ compensation policies are gaining attention, with over 50% of stakeholders considering this a priority. This focus aligns with the understanding of the interconnectedness of physical injuries and mental health. The industry grapples with defining the compensability of mental health conditions, striving to support recovery while delineating coverage boundaries. Other areas of concern include workforce recruitment, retention, and litigation, with a spotlight on technology’s role in addressing these challenges and improving operational efficiency.
