A North Carolina resident has been charged with 54 felony counts in connection with an extensive travel insurance fraud operation that spanned four years. Investigators from the North Carolina Department of Insurance allege that the individual used falsified documents to file fraudulent claims worth more than $1.8 million combined.
According to authorities, the accused submitted forged medical paperwork, altered identification, fake credit card records, and manipulated airline documentation to support claims made to multiple travel insurance companies. Between 2020 and 2024, the individual is alleged to have successfully obtained over $955,000 and attempted to secure an additional $887,000.
Charges include 26 counts of insurance fraud, 18 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, and 10 counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. The accused is being held on a $1 million secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 18.
State Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey emphasized that insurance fraud impacts all policyholders by driving up premiums. The Department urges anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to contact its Criminal Investigations Division through its public reporting hotlines.
