Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024 Fraud Insurance Industry Litigation Property

A Greensboro, North Carolina woman is facing charges of insurance fraud and identity theft after allegedly filing a false claim on her deceased mother’s home. The North Carolina Department of Insurance reported that the woman used her late mother’s name to secure a homeowner’s policy from North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance, despite her mother having passed away in May 2023.

The claim, totaling $49,000, sought coverage for damage that allegedly occurred before the policy was purchased. Authorities say the fraudulent claim was made in January 2024. Following an investigation by the department’s Criminal Investigations Division, charges were brought against the woman, who is scheduled for a court appearance in Guilford County District Court on December 18.

The case underscores the importance of thorough claims investigations and highlights the legal consequences of attempting to commit insurance fraud.
