An Ohio man, Justin Mack, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a sophisticated insurance fraud scheme totaling over $229,000. Mack filed 24 fraudulent claims with various insurers using falsified documentation and stolen identities. He has also been ordered to pay restitution.
The fraud involved several companies, including American Strategic Insurance, Lemonade Insurance, Aetna, and Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance. Mack submitted claims for fabricated events, such as property theft, medical expenses, and veterinary services. One notable incident included a $42,134.14 claim for vandalism and theft at a nonexistent apartment. In another, he claimed over $162,000 for false medical treatments, including a fabricated cancer diagnosis.
Mack’s actions were uncovered through a thorough investigation by the Ohio Department of Insurance. His fraudulent activities were supported by altered police reports, receipts, and medical records. On Nov. 25, Mack pleaded guilty to 13 felony charges, including insurance fraud, tampering with records, and identity fraud.
This case highlights the importance of vigilant investigative practices in uncovering and prosecuting insurance fraud, which imposes significant costs on both companies and consumers.
