Penn. Governor Proposes Med Mal Reforms
Monday, March 29th, 2004 LiabilityPennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell has unveiled a package of medical malpractice liability reform initiatives that he says should bring stability to an already improving malpractice climate in the state. Gov. Rendell, a Democrat, issued his proposals on March 24. They include basing attorney and referral fees in medical malpractice cases on the size of the award, creating a mediation program involving hospitals and health systems, and giving judges greater powers to limit what the governor called “runaway” awards. Gov. Rendell also wants to give the state insurance commission greater authority in setting medical malpractice insurance rates.
