Putting a limit on liability
Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 LiabilityThe U.S. Supreme Court tightened the constitutional limits on punitive damages, setting aside a $79.5 million award in a smoker case against Altria Group Inc.’s Philip Morris USA unit. The justices, voting 5-4 in the case of an Oregon man who died of lung cancer, said a lower court improperly let jurors punish Philip Morris for the health problems of other smokers.
