Rising Newport News, Va. freshman dies after practice

A rising freshman at a Newport News high school died after collapsing at cross country practice Thursday. Joy Meyer, 14, participated in the first official day of practice for the Menchville High School cross country team Thursday, Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools told WAVY.com. Joy finished the run at Noland Trail at the Mariner’s Museum Park and said she was dizzy. Then she collapsed. Price said paramedics were called and Joy was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
