Social Security Nbr Rule Questioned
Monday, October 2nd, 2000 Risk ManagementMany basic insurance operations could be severely hampered by legislation aimed at protecting the privacy of Social Security numbers, industry groups say. The legislation, H.R. 4857, called the Privacy and Identity Protection Act of 2000, places strict limits on the use of Social Security numbers in the regular conduct of business. The White House supports the legislation, which was introduced by Rep. E. Clay Shaw Jr., R-Fla. Under H.R. 4857, Social Security numbers would no longer appear on checks issued by the federal government. In addition, the sale and purchase of Social Security numbers would be largely prohibited. The legislation would also make it illegal for a private firm to refuse to do business with someone who refuses to provide a Social Security number.
