Study Rebuts Some Mold Disease Claims

Thursday, May 27th, 2004 Liability Life & Health Property

Insurers are welcoming a new study that concludes that while indoor mold and dampness can cause respiratory diseases, they cannot be linked conclusively to other health disorders. The National Academy of Sciences’ study involved “an exhaustive review” of scientific literature dealing with indoor mold and dampness, said Noreen C. Clark, chair of the NAS’ committee on damp indoor spaces and health, in a statement accompanying the release of the report earlier this week. The NAS analysis, conducted by a panel of independent researchers and academics, found no evidence that exposure to mold or dampness causes chronic fatigue, neuropsychiatric problems or other maladies. Insurers, which have been deluged with mold-related health claims and lawsuits in recent years, hailed the study.
