Remember paper? Then you might remember when paper was declared obsolete, and recall your company’s first timeline for eliminating it. The slogan “paperless company” has been around for more than 20 years, and was applied especially to data- and communication-intensive fields such as insurance. Business, in general, has made major progress toward eliminating paper documentation. In the areas of electronic data capture and storage, correspondence, and billing, a job that is essentially some variation on record keeping or communication has changed beyond recognition in the past two decades. In the field of litigation management, electronic billing has made inroads into the insurance industry’s efforts to eliminate the mountains of paper produced by its claim departments, and to mitigate the delays, missed communications, miscommunications, and other costly errors that paper can engender.
