A wayward tire led to some harrowing moments for motorists on Route 222 in Berks County on Monday. The tire came loose from a pickup truck, hit the median, bounced and hit a box truck, bounced again and then flew through the windshield of a small school bus, police said. The mishap happened in the northbound lanes of 222, between the Route 724 and Penn Avenue interchanges, in Spring Township. Multiple ambulances responded to the scene, but the bus driver and two Conrad Weiser Area School District students on the bus somehow managed to escape injury, according to Randall Grove, the district’s superintendent.
