Tropical Storm Florence Could Become Hurricane By Weekend
Thursday, September 7th, 2006 Catastrophe PropertyTropical Storm Florence gained strength in the open Atlantic on Wednesday and could become a hurricane by the weekend, but forcasters said it was too soon to tell if it would reach the United States. The storm had sustained wind near 50 mph Wednesday afternoon, over the 39 mph threshold for it to be classified as a tropical storm. At 5 p.m. ET, the storm was centered about 770 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands, or about 1,240 miles southeast of Bermuda, and was moving toward the west-northwest at about 9 mph.
