Writing Training Can Boost Bottom Line

Across the country, there are proposals for a fifth year of high school so that students can improve their reading and writing skills before college. Across the business world, the employee shortage is causing companies to compete for skilled professionals and to train them to perform even better. Since it has become a cliché that many business people have trouble writing a coherent paragraph, why is it that relatively few insurance companies offer ongoing training in the core competency of writing? Insurance people spend more than one-quarter of their time communicating in writing. From claims and its ever-present denial letters, letters to doctors, opposing and house attorneys, and letters to commissioners, to workers’ compensation, underwriting, loss control and risk management, with their endless flow of reports, procedures, customer letters and letters to agents, those in the insurance industry
