Maximum Medical Improvement
The point when an injured worker's condition has stabilized and is not expected to improve further with treatment.
MMI is declared by a physician and triggers transition from temporary to permanent benefits, impairment ratings, and return-to-work decisions. Treatment may continue for maintenance but not cure.
Examples
After 18 months of therapy, the treating doctor states no further functional gain is expected — MMI assigned with 8% whole person impairment.
Common Misconceptions
Disputes between treating and IME doctors on MMI date. Returning to heavy work before MMI against advice risks re-injury.
