2024 Hurricanes Leave Nearly 350,000 Cars Flood-Damaged, CARFAX Warns

Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 Auto Catastrophe Fraud Risk Management

The 2024 hurricane season has already inflicted flood damage on approximately 347,000 vehicles across the United States, according to CARFAX’s latest estimates. Hurricane Milton alone is responsible for around 120,000 water-damaged cars in Florida, adding to the 138,000 impacted by Hurricane Helene across multiple states. Additionally, up to 89,000 cars sustained flood damage from various smaller storms over the summer.

Thousands of these flood-damaged vehicles may already be appearing on the market, as unscrupulous sellers clean them up and attempt to hide the damage. Buyers who purchase these cars may unknowingly face expensive repairs, potential safety hazards, and even health risks linked to flood-induced mold and corrosion. CARFAX recommends three preventive steps for consumers: using the free CARFAX Flood Check tool, inspecting for common signs of water damage, and consulting a trusted mechanic for a thorough inspection and test drive.

Flood-related damage in cars often leads to hidden issues in electrical and mechanical systems, making these vehicles a significant financial and safety risk for unwitting buyers. With the U.S. experiencing its worst hurricane season for car damage since 2022, when Hurricane Ian affected around 358,000 vehicles, CARFAX urges consumers to stay vigilant.
