The Park Fire in Northern California has rapidly expanded, burning over 383,000 acres, which is almost half the size of Rhode Island. As of Tuesday morning, the fire ranks as the fifth-largest in California’s history. Four counties—Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama—have been significantly impacted, with Tehama County experiencing the most extensive damage. So far, 165 structures have been destroyed, and more than 4,200 buildings remain threatened.
The fire, which started less than a week ago from a burning car, has led to challenging conditions for firefighters. Although cooler temperatures on Sunday helped reduce the fire’s intensity, increased temperatures and clearer skies have allowed the fire to spread more aggressively in some areas. The blaze has even generated fire tornadoes and reached the western edge of Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The accused arsonist, Ronnie Dean Stout II, has been charged with reckless arson and faces additional enhancements. Stout, with a history of felony convictions, could face severe penalties if the fire results in serious bodily injury or death. Meanwhile, residents like Julie Yarbough and others have witnessed the destruction firsthand, with many losing their homes and properties to the flames.
