The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finalized training and certification regulations for pilots of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, an essential step in advancing air taxi services. This rule is seen as the "final piece" necessary for the safe introduction of eVTOLs into urban environments, with companies such as Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation positioning themselves as leaders in this emerging field. Both companies saw a rise in share prices following the FAA’s announcement.

FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker highlighted that the new rules are flexible and performance-based, ensuring the technology can safely evolve while meeting modern standards. The regulations allow pilots to train with one set of flight controls, a significant change from earlier requirements. Companies like Joby and Archer are preparing for passenger services as early as 2025, with applications ranging from urban air travel to air ambulance and cargo transport. Major investments, such as Delta Air Lines’ $60 million stake in Joby and Toyota’s recent $500 million contribution, further demonstrate growing confidence in the future of eVTOLs.
