Health officials in Florida are raising concerns after more than 20 people were sickened by consuming raw, unpasteurized milk linked to a single unidentified farm. Among the 21 reported cases, six were children under the age of 10, and seven required hospitalization. Two individuals experienced severe complications, prompting the Florida Department of Health to issue a statewide warning.

The infections occurred in both north and central regions of the state and were linked to bacteria such as campylobacter and shiga toxin-producing E. coli. These pathogens can cause serious health conditions including kidney failure and long-term complications. The state’s health alert emphasized concerns about the farm’s sanitation practices given the number of affected individuals.

While raw milk remains illegal to sell for human consumption in Florida, it can be legally marketed for animal use with appropriate labeling. Still, it remains available in some health food stores and markets, where it is often purchased by consumers seeking perceived health benefits.

The FDA and health experts warn that unpasteurized milk can carry harmful bacteria despite its growing popularity. Nationally, thousands of illness cases have been linked to raw milk over the past two decades. Florida residents are advised to weigh the health risks associated with raw milk consumption, especially for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
