Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo unveiled a strategic vision for the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) during the AI Seoul Summit. The plan, developed under President Biden’s leadership, outlines the Department’s approach to ensuring AI safety through scientific research, standardization, and global cooperation. Raimondo emphasized the importance of mitigating AI risks to harness its potential benefits responsibly.

The AISI’s strategic goals include advancing AI safety science, demonstrating best practices, and supporting coordinated efforts across institutions and communities. Initiatives will involve testing advanced AI models, developing guidelines, and conducting technical research in collaboration with industry, academia, and international partners.

Raimondo also announced the launch of a global network of AI Safety Institutes, fostering international cooperation. The network will build on collaborations with AI institutes from the UK, Japan, Canada, Singapore, and the European AI Office. AISI plans to convene these institutes later this year in the San Francisco area, leveraging its new Bay Area presence to enhance collaboration and recruit talent.
