Hurricane Debby Hits Florida’s Big Bend, Promises Severe Southeast Flooding

Hurricane Debby has struck Florida’s Big Bend region, bringing sustained winds of 80 mph and causing significant concern for historic flooding across the Southeast. As the hurricane’s forward speed stalls, areas from northern Florida to the coastal regions of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina are bracing for extreme rainfall, with NOAA issuing their highest flood outlook for the next few days. This heavy rainfall, compounded by onshore winds, could lead to catastrophic flooding in these areas.

The hurricane made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida, at 7 a.m. EDT, and is expected to bring up to 30 inches of rain in some locations through Saturday morning. The National Hurricane Center highlights the risks of life-threatening storm surges, particularly in the Florida Big Bend, Georgia, and South Carolina coasts. The potential for tornadoes adds another layer of danger, with a watch in effect for northern and central Florida, and southeast Georgia.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially those in flood-prone areas. Floodwaters could persist due to the slow movement of the storm, which is anticipated to meander near the Southeast coast throughout the week. The extended impact period increases the risk of severe flooding, making it crucial for communities to heed all warnings and take necessary precautions.
