Hurricane Helene is expected to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast as a major hurricane on Thursday, with a potentially devastating storm surge, damaging winds, and significant rainfall. The National Hurricane Center warns of life-threatening storm surges, particularly in Florida’s Big Bend and Nature Coast, where water levels could exceed 10 feet in some areas. In addition to coastal impacts, the storm will bring flash flooding, powerful winds, and a tornado risk across northern Florida, southern Georgia, and parts of the Carolinas.

As Helene intensifies in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, conditions inland will deteriorate, with flash flooding expected from Georgia to the southern Appalachians. Areas of northern Georgia, western North Carolina, and South Carolina could see up to 15 inches of rain, leading to landslides and widespread flooding. Wind gusts from Helene will likely cause power outages and structural damage far inland as the storm pushes north toward the Ohio Valley by Friday.

Residents in the affected regions are urged to finalize evacuation plans and follow emergency management directives. The storm is poised to become one of the most impactful of the 2024 hurricane season, with inland flooding and widespread wind damage remaining top concerns.
