NFL Preseason Concussions Hit Record Low with Safety Measures in Place

The NFL announced a significant decrease in concussions during the 2024 preseason, with only 44 concussions reported, marking a historic low since tracking began in 2015. This represents a 24% reduction from 2023 and less than half the number of concussions seen in 2022. The league attributes this decline to multiple safety initiatives, including enhanced helmet technology, the continued use of Guardian Caps, and updated rule changes designed to minimize high-risk plays. The NFL’s holistic approach to concussion prevention includes research into injury-causing events, better education on proper tackling techniques, and strict enforcement of protective protocols.

One key factor in reducing concussions has been the widespread adoption of high-performance helmets, with 99% of players now wearing top-rated models. Additionally, Guardian Caps, which have been mandated in certain situations, have been proven to reduce concussions by nearly 50% during mandated sessions. The NFL also reported promising progress in lowering other injuries, particularly lower-extremity strains and ACL tears, thanks to an acclimation period during preseason practices. This strategy helps players ramp up their performance levels gradually, reducing the risk of injury.

The new Dynamic Kickoff rule was another successful measure, resulting in 70% of kickoffs being returned and a 32% decrease in injury rates on kickoffs, aligning them more closely with the injury rates seen on other types of plays. NFL executives are cautiously optimistic about the impact of these safety protocols and will continue to track player safety throughout the regular season. The results so far, however, suggest the league is on the right path in reducing injuries and fostering a safer playing environment.
