Retired Fire Captain Arrested for Alleged Insurance Fraud

Wednesday, June 12th, 2024 Fraud Insurance Industry Liability Litigation

A retired fire captain from Davie, Florida, has been arrested on charges of insurance fraud and criminal use of personal identification, according to a statement from Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis. The charges stem from a March 2022 claim for water damage filed under the individual’s homeowner’s policy with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation. It was alleged that the retired fire captain had to vacate their home in June 2022 for repairs and stayed at a resort in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

However, it is claimed that the individual submitted falsified lodging invoices for an additional 26 nights at the resort. Investigators discovered that during the dates in question, the retired fire captain was actually serving as an instructor at the Fire Academy in Ocala. Evidence from the individual’s Sun Pass transponder reportedly showed travel between Ocala and Broward County, contradicting the claims of being at the resort.

The suspect has been booked into jail and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis emphasized the serious consequences of insurance fraud and commended the investigative team for their efforts in holding individuals accountable. Patronis also expressed disappointment in the actions, highlighting the betrayal of trust when former first responders commit fraud.
