Segway E-Scooter Recall: Folding Mechanism Hazard Risks Rider Injury

Segway has initiated a recall of approximately 220,000 Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters in the United States, following numerous reports of the folding mechanism failing during use. This defect causes the handlebars to unexpectedly collapse, leading to falls and injuries. The recall is critical for claims professionals due to the potential for significant liability claims stemming from these incidents.

The affected scooters, sold at major retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online platforms, have been implicated in 68 reported incidents, resulting in 20 injuries, including broken bones and other serious trauma. The scope of this recall highlights the importance of thorough product liability assessments and the need for adjusters to be well-versed in handling claims related to defective consumer products.

Claims adjusters should be prepared to address claims involving these recalled scooters, focusing on documenting the extent of injuries, assessing the product’s defect, and determining liability. The potential for long-term medical expenses and lost wages underscores the need for meticulous claim handling. Insurance professionals must also consider the implications for retailers and distributors in the supply chain, as they may also bear responsibility for the sale of defective products.

Segway is offering a free maintenance kit to address the issue, but the sheer volume of affected units suggests that claims may continue to arise. Adjusters should stay informed about the recall’s progress and be prepared to handle complex cases involving product defects and resulting injuries.
