Snowflake Data Breach Potentially Among Largest Ever

Friday, June 7th, 2024 Legislation & Regulation Risk Management Technology

A hack against customers of cloud storage provider Snowflake is rapidly escalating into one of the largest data breaches ever recorded. Last week, Snowflake revealed that cybercriminals had attempted to access customer accounts using stolen login credentials. Since then, cybercriminals have claimed to be selling data from several major firms, with hundreds of Snowflake customer passwords found online.

Initial reports indicated that only a limited number of accounts were compromised. However, hackers are now selling data from Ticketmaster and Santander, both of which have acknowledged breaches related to Snowflake. Additionally, data from Advance Auto Parts and LendingTree has allegedly been compromised, with the hacker group ShinyHunters claiming responsibility.

Snowflake’s Chief Information Security Officer Brad Jones stated that the breaches were due to infostealing malware obtaining single-factor authentication credentials. He emphasized that there was no evidence of a vulnerability within Snowflake’s platform. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and Australia’s Cyber Security Center have issued alerts regarding the incident.

The breach underscores the importance of multi-factor authentication and highlights the challenges companies face in securing third-party services. As investigations continue, Snowflake has urged its customers to enforce stronger security measures to prevent further compromises.
