Thanksgiving Travel Expected to Break Records, Says AAA

Thanksgiving travel is projected to reach record levels this year, with 79.9 million Americans planning to journey 50 miles or more from home, according to AAA. This represents a 1.7 million increase over last year and a 2 million jump from 2019. AAA attributes this surge to strong travel demand post-pandemic, fueled by reconnecting with loved ones and a desire for memorable vacations.

By Car: Driving remains the dominant mode of travel, with 71.7 million hitting the road, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. Lower gas prices are contributing to this increase. Cities such as Atlanta, Orlando, and Phoenix are leading in car rental demand, with the busiest rental pick-up expected the day before Thanksgiving.

By Air: Air travel is also seeing significant growth, with 5.84 million travelers taking to the skies—up 11% from 2019. While domestic flight costs have risen slightly, international air travel is booming due to lower ticket prices.

Other Modes: Nearly 2.3 million travelers are turning to buses, trains, and cruises, reflecting an 18% increase compared to 2019. Cruises, in particular, have seen a 20% rise in bookings as vacationers embrace this option.

Peak traffic times vary by metro areas, with Wednesday and Sunday afternoons predicted to be the most congested. To minimize delays, drivers are advised to use traffic apps and plan strategically. Popular destinations include Florida, Las Vegas, and Hawaii, with Europe and the Caribbean topping the list for international travelers.
