Volkswagen to Recall 114,000 U.S. Vehicles Over Airbag Explosion Hazard

Thursday, November 7th, 2024 Auto Legislation & Regulation Liability Risk Management

Volkswagen has issued a recall for 114,478 vehicles in the United States, targeting specific Beetle and Passat models manufactured between 2006 and 2019. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that the recall addresses a potential safety hazard involving the driver-side airbag inflators, which could explode due to propellant degradation. This degradation risk is especially concerning in regions with high temperatures and humidity.

According to the NHTSA, the prolonged exposure to extreme environmental conditions may compromise the inflator’s integrity, resulting in potential ruptures or explosions upon deployment. Although Volkswagen has not yet provided a public comment on the recall, it has assured that affected vehicles will receive free airbag module replacements at authorized dealerships.

Owners of affected models are encouraged to contact their Volkswagen dealers or refer to the NHTSA’s website for detailed information on the recall and repair process. This recall highlights ongoing concerns across the industry regarding airbag safety in vehicles exposed to certain environmental conditions.
