The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Iowa 80, known as the world’s largest truck stop, and Joplin 44 in Missouri a total of $390,784 for violating Clean Water Act regulations. The 2023 EPA inspections found that both truck stops failed to implement proper Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, which are required for facilities storing 1,320 gallons or more of oil products. These regulations help prevent petroleum spills by enforcing containment measures, regular inspections, and equipment integrity testing.
Owned by Iowa 80 Group Inc., both truck stops have since updated their SPCC plans, completed tank inspections, and made necessary repairs to comply with federal standards. The settlement agreements are now available for public comment for 30 days. This case highlights the EPA’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring fair compliance across the trucking industry.
