Boston Proposes Permit Requirement for Food Delivery Apps

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has introduced an ordinance that, if passed, would require food delivery companies like DoorDash, UberEats, and GrubHub to obtain a city permit. The proposal includes mandates for liability insurance covering all drivers, including those using motorcycles, mopeds, and electric scooters, and would require companies to share data on delivery trips and unsafe driving behaviors. The initiative comes in response to rising safety concerns over reckless driving by delivery workers, with reports of speeding, running red lights, and operating unregistered vehicles.

City officials argue that the ordinance would improve public safety by holding large delivery platforms accountable for their impact on Boston’s streets. The proposal has drawn criticism from industry representatives, with DoorDash warning that new regulations could lead to higher costs for consumers without significantly improving safety. However, city leaders maintain that the measure is necessary to address growing concerns about congestion and dangerous driving practices linked to food delivery services.

If approved, the ordinance would apply to major third-party delivery services but exclude small businesses with a limited number of delivery drivers. It would also require companies to submit proof of adequate insurance and provide data on delivery routes, vehicle types, and traffic violations.
