A rare snowstorm is set to impact northern Florida and parts of Alabama, leading both states to declare states of emergency in preparation for icy conditions. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis activated the National Guard and authorized state agencies to respond as needed, while Alabama’s governor implemented similar emergency measures.
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation issued a bulletin suspending restrictions on early prescription refills, ensuring residents could access medications ahead of the storm. By early Tuesday, schools and state offices across the Florida Panhandle were closed in anticipation of hazardous road conditions, with snow and sleet accumulations forecasted to reach up to five inches.
Governor DeSantis’ executive order also grants flexibility to state and local governments to waive certain regulations, such as toll collections, and to coordinate with federal agencies for emergency relief. Additionally, the Florida Housing Finance Corporation has been directed to assist local governments in addressing emergency housing needs.
These proactive steps underscore the states’ efforts to mitigate the potential impacts of the unusual weather event, prioritizing public safety and ensuring that emergency resources are ready for deployment.
