
Dealing with Disaster: How to Help Ease Trauma Felt By Insureds On Aug. 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida. Hurricane-force winds reached speeds of 145 mph and turned homes and businesses into rubble. The disaster left 117,000 without homes and 48 people dead. Although Andrews wrath was over in a few hours, the people who lost their homes will feel its effects forever. When disasters happen, claims adjusters must come face to face with those who have suffered devastating losses, forced by their position to place a dollar value on priceless possessions and, essentially, the livelihood of the survivors. Survivors will be experiencing myriad emotions, ranging from shock and anxiety to anger and despair, and, unfortunately, adjusters will arrive on the scene when emotions are at their peak.
