CoreLogic’s latest insured loss estimate from Hurricane Helene has risen significantly, now projected to range from $10.5 billion to $17.5 billion. This figure includes both public and private insured losses from wind and flooding across residential and commercial properties. Total economic losses are estimated to reach as high as $47.5 billion, taking into account both insured and uninsured storm surge and inland flooding damages. The disaster affected 16 states, many of which were outside designated Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs).
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is expected to cover up to $6.5 billion in flood-related damages, providing crucial recovery aid. However, a significant portion of the damage remains uninsured, particularly in regions unaccustomed to such severe storms. This makes Hurricane Helene one of the top 10 costliest hurricanes for U.S. insurers, alongside hurricanes like Katrina and Ian.
