An early morning fire on June 9, 2025, broke out at a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) facility in Philadelphia, damaging 40 decommissioned buses. Though the blaze sent thick black smoke into the sky, there were no injuries, and city officials confirmed that public transportation services were not disrupted.

Firefighters responded to the lot before 6:15 a.m., but faced initial difficulties accessing water due to obstructed pathways and fencing. Once SEPTA personnel towed operational buses and cleared access points, crews were able to bring the fire under control within two hours. The affected buses were already retired from service and awaiting disposal.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health issued a precautionary advisory, urging residents nearby to remain indoors and avoid the area. Air quality inspectors assessed the situation and reported that environmental conditions improved soon after the fire was contained.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While the damage is limited to out-of-service vehicles, insurance adjusters and property loss specialists may take interest in reviewing disposal procedures, lot security, and the fire suppression infrastructure at similar facilities.
