A series of powerful storm systems that swept through the United States and Europe in late May and early June 2025 have caused extensive damage, resulting in insured losses totaling hundreds of millions—and possibly billions—of dollars. According to Aon’s latest catastrophe report, the storms struck key metropolitan areas with intense wind, hail, and flooding.

In the US, major impacts were reported in Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. The Dallas-Fort Worth area saw significant hail and wind damage, while Wichita experienced widespread flooding. Insurers, including State Farm, reported thousands of claims across several states. A deadly EF3 tornado that crossed from Missouri into Illinois on May 22 added to a growing list of severe weather events that have battered the Midwest this spring.

From May 29 to June 4, straight-line winds and tornadoes continued to wreak havoc, even overturning vehicles on Kansas City highways. Gallagher Re estimates that the total insured losses from recent convective storm outbreaks could range between $4 billion and $7 billion.

Meanwhile, Europe faced its own round of violent weather. Storms brought heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstones nearly 4 inches in diameter to parts of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, and Hungary. Aon highlighted especially high insurance exposure in France’s Puy-de-Dôme region, where damage to homes, vehicles, and crops was widespread.
