Technology Revolutionizes Workers’ Comp with Injury Prevention and Enhanced Recovery

Thursday, May 16th, 2024 Insurance Industry Risk Management Technology Workers' Compensation

The workers’ compensation industry, historically reliant on personal interactions and standalone education to enhance workplace safety, is rapidly embracing new technology to improve injury prevention and recovery. Advanced tools such as wearables, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and exoskeletons are transforming the way risk managers prevent injuries and expedite the return-to-work process.

Wearable technology, in particular, has shown promising results. These devices, which detect and correct non-ergonomic movements, have been adopted by companies like Nationwide. Their Kinetic Insurance wearable solution alerts employees of risky postures, reducing high-risk movements by about 35%. Similarly, FIGUR8’s sensor technology aids in recovery by providing detailed assessments of a worker’s range of motion, resulting in a 22% reduction in recovery time in some cases.

The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) has been at the forefront of researching and promoting these technologies. Since 2018, NCCI has documented the growing interest and adoption of safety technologies, identifying key areas such as wearable tech, computer vision, AI, and machine learning. Early case studies from AI implementations show dramatic reductions in high-risk postures, underscoring the potential of these innovations.

Despite the excitement, there are challenges. Privacy concerns, the initial cost of implementation, and employee skepticism must be addressed to ensure widespread adoption. Success hinges on transparent communication, strong safety programs, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of these technologies. As more employers become aware of and trust these tools, the workers’ comp industry is poised for significant transformation, with tech-driven solutions leading the way.
