Why Florida, Texas, and California Lead the Nation in Lightning Insurance Claims

Lightning is one of the most unpredictable natural hazards, and for homeowners in Florida, Texas, and California, it’s also among the most costly. These three states routinely top the list for lightning-related insurance claims—each for unique reasons tied to geography, weather patterns, and risk exposure.

Florida wears the crown as the U.S. lightning capital, with more than a million strikes annually. The bulk of claims come from power surges that damage HVAC units, appliances, and entire electrical systems. May through October marks the state’s peak storm season, with afternoon strikes occurring like clockwork.

In Texas, it’s not the frequency but the financial toll that stands out. With an average lightning claim cost of $38,558 in 2024, the Lone Star State is notorious for destructive ground surges and structural damage. Intense spring and early summer storms create ideal conditions for major electrical impacts.

California rounds out the top three not by storm volume but by wildfire risk. Lightning ignites fires in dry terrain, leading to large-scale property losses. Although actual strikes are less frequent, their consequences—especially in densely populated regions—can be severe.

For adjusters and insurers, understanding regional lightning risk is key. Claims trends show that while incidents may decline overall, preparedness and protective measures remain crucial. Surge protection, regular maintenance, and homeowner education can significantly reduce loss severity when nature strikes.
