Ohio’s Strategy to Attract and Train Insurance Talent

Thursday, September 19th, 2024 Education & Training Insurance Industry Risk Management Technology

Ohio has developed a winning formula for attracting and training new insurance and risk management professionals. By combining the efforts of its universities, local insurers, and other key stakeholders, the state has become a leader in fostering talent for the insurance industry. Cincinnati Insurance, for example, has transformed its internship program, allowing students to engage in meaningful work that reflects real-world industry roles. This hands-on approach has resulted in a surge of interest from students, many of whom gain valuable experience in fields like underwriting and coding.

At the University of Cincinnati, Ann Hofmann leads a thriving risk management program that has grown significantly since its 2010 launch. With backing from regional insurance leaders like Great American Insurance, the program now counts 130 majors. Students are also given international exposure through trips to key industry centers like Lloyd’s of London. This practical and global experience has sparked enthusiasm among students, further strengthening Ohio’s insurance workforce pipeline.

Ohio Insurance Institute (OII) Vice President Jody Foltyn noted the strong university-business connections, reinforced during the pandemic when Cincinnati Insurance continued its internships remotely. These relationships are essential as Ohio builds a robust, thriving insurance industry workforce, creating opportunities for both students and businesses to flourish.
