Salt Lake City police arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly broke into a luxury car dealership and crashed several cars before attempting to steal a Bentley loaded with stolen goods.

After responding to nearly 600 accidents over five days, the Utah Highway Patrol is pleading with drivers to slow down when the roads are covered in ice and snow.

A local man is in jail for allegedly filing a false insurance claim after losing his truck while intoxicated. Joseph Michael Harrington, 41, of Washington City, faces one second-degree felony count of filing a false or fraudulent insurance claim, along with two misdemeanor charges for providing a written false statement and for reporting a fraudulent emergency to police, fire or medical, according to the probable cause statement filed in support of the arrest.

There were an estimated 748,841 vehicle thefts in the United States in 2018, or about 229 per 100,000 Americans. The vehicles stolen were worth, according to the FBI, an estimated total of over $6 billion.

A large Holladay home was ravaged in a blaze late Saturday, firefighters said. Crews were called to 6085 S. Tolcate Woods Lane (2930 East) at 8:20 p.m. where the fire had started in the basement, Unified Fire Authority officials said.
